Air Transport Monitoring & Reporting

Low Cost Monitor

Since a few years, the Low Cost Carrier (LCC) market is part of the German air transport market. The Low Cost Carrier Monitor, jointly issued by ADV and DLR, informs on significant features of the Low Cost Carrier traffic and current developments in this market segment two times a year. Topics covered include e.g. the number and relative importance of Low Cost Carriers, their supply including air fares and passenger demand of Low Cost services.

Air Transport Statistics

Monthly evaluation of German air transport statistics performed by DLR. One of the traditional and important data bases to be applied for air transport studies is the official German air transport statistic. Among others it serves for identification of the German air transport demand and it is analysed by FW from different points of view.

Air Transport Report

Data and comments on the German and worldwide air transport. The Air Transport Report informs on current developments in air transport. Facts on mainly the German, but also the European and global air transport are collected and assessed in the well-proven way.

Global Aviation Monitor

The strong drop in air transport worldwide seems to have slowed down for now. The negative growth rates approached almost zero over the past few months. A postitive growth is possible by the end of 2009. This is one of the important conclusions of the new air transport study Global Aviation Monitor (GAM) performed by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR).

Observatory of the Air Transport Market

For three years (2007 to 2009), DLR has been assigned the task of Official Monitoring Institution of the European Aviation industry by the European Commission (Head Office Energy and Transport). The annual reports give an overview on the development of the entire air transport industry in Europe and have become a vital basis of information for decision makers in politics and economy.

MONITOR: Future Studies

Since the invention of the jet aircraft, air traffic has grown with high rates and with respect to the meanwhile dominant international air transport as part and as a driver for an increasing globalisation of the world. There is also a high potential for a further significant increase of air transport, if more nations will economically develop during the next decades. Statements on the future development of the air transport sector are required for various purposes and are also essential for strategic planning of the air transport infrastructure (airports and air traffic control) and quantifying potential environmental impacts caused by air transport.

MONITOR Indicator Scheme

The MONITOR indicator scheme as one of three pillars of the monitoring system on global air transport development is an outcome of a EU-funded project.

MONITOR-Database for Air Transport Developments

In order to be able to model, forecast and evaluate the development of air transport on various spatial scales, as precise information as possible is required on the description of this development. As part of the MONITOR portal the database has the aim to supply information to multiple stakeholders on air transport development, especially for strategic analysis, modeling activities and quantification exercises.

MONITOR portal

The aim of the MONITOR portal, which was established within an EU project, is to support actors with information needs on air transport development, especially for strategic analysis, modeling activities and quantification exercises. Therefore a monitoring system has been developed, consisting of the three pillars (meta-) database, indicators and future studies, which allow a systematic and complementary view on the long-term development of air transport on different spatial and societal levels

DLR Air Freight Model

Air freight is a leading indicator for economic development, which is important for precise air traffic forecasts. The air freight market is different in structure and dynamics compared to other freight markets like ground and sea freight.

Regional Distribution of Air Transport Demand

Although the official statistics provide detailed information concerning traffic movements, they do not contain precise details regarding demand structures. Therefore, passenger surveys are held at all German airports every few years. In its early stages, DLR helped with the conception of these surveys and developed a Model of Regional Distribution of Air Transport Demand.

Business Aviation

Business Aviation is part of the air transport. It is of particular interest for business travellers due to short distances, a certain comfort, and speed. Since in this segment smaller aircraft are used, which require shorter runways than the regular scheduled air and charter traffic, they can operate from a larger number of airports. Since 2005, however, these airports have to be adjusted to the new standards according to a JAR-OPS rule.

Small Regional Air Transport in Europe

Under pressure from e.g. low cost carriers and increasing average aircraft size, “traditional”, “niche” regional air traffic has heavily lost market shares. We therefore aim at identifying pillars for a sustainable new and innovative regional air transport “2.0” in Europe.

Low Cost Carrier

Since a few years so-called Low Cost Carriers (LCC) are constantly emerging in the German air transport market by aquiring demand mainly through low prices. The US-American airline Southwest, currently ranging among the world`s 10 major airlines, is the pioneer of all LCC`s.

Low Cost Carriers all over the World

In Europe, cheap flights are almost taken for granted. Some airlines offer individual flights for less than 20 Euro - one can even do a tour around Europe for 100 Euro!

German, European and Global Air Transport

In the last decade demand for air travel has increased considerably worldwide and within Germany. Despite some setbacks during crisis like 9/11, Great Financial Crisis, etc., air traffic has increased steadily. The largest air transport markets are the US, East Asia and Europe. Currently, East Asia is the fastest growing market worldwide.

Air Transport in Germany

Air transport covering a traffic volume of more than 190 million passengers in Germany in 2008 has mainly been handled at around 25 international airports. The largest airport is Frankfurt/Main with approx. 53 million passengers per year. The network is built up by several other regional airports and a large number of airports operating with shorter runways.

German Air Traffic

German air traffic comprises both overflight traffic and airplanes heading for domestic airports. At 7am on September 11 2009, approximately 350 civil airplanes were flying in the German controlled air space. More than 35% were only flyovers requiring neither departure nor landing on an airport in Germany.
