German air traffic comprises both overflight traffic and airplanes heading for domestic airports. At 7am on September 11 2009, approximately 350 civil airplanes were flying in the German controlled air space. More than 35% were only flyovers requiring neither departure nor landing on an airport in Germany.
At this time domestic flight traffic amounted to 22% as well as the arriving cross-border air traffic. Only around 20% of the airplanes were heading for international destinations. These figures, however, vary with the time of day, day of the week or season. Most airplanes are operated by Lufthansa, followed by Air Berlin and Ryanair.
