The Next Generation of Aircraft Design

16 June 2015

Especially in the early phases of aircraft design, computer simulations play a major role in the prediction of physical properties of the aircraft. A major challenge arises in aircraft design as these properties are in constant interaction with each other. Hence, it is important to not only connect the simulation models but also the corresponding experts to unite all competences and arrive at the best possible design. The need for a “3rd generation multi-disciplinary optimization” arises which is the core of the AGILE project.

AGILE is an EU funded project under the lead of DLR Air Transportation Systems. The AGILE kick-off takes place in Hamburg from the 16th to the 18th of June. On the one hand 20 partners from Canada across Europe to Russia, from industry, research and academia offer the unique chance to unite all competences in an international framework. On the other hand, the composition of partners reflects the heterogeneous team structure that is characteristic for today’s design teams but also demanding to orchestrate.

Aircraft Design in the Integrated Design Lab

In recent years, DLR developed key technologies to enable the cooperation from a technical point of view. These technologies constitute the backbone of the project. As a common data forma [CPACS] can be mentioned, as well as, the integration framework [RCE].

During the initial stage of the project all partners will connect to the DLR infrastructure. In the subsequent two years different optimization strategies will be evaluated and applied to new unconventional aircraft configurations. The project success will be measured as the time difference between the 3rd generation and classic design approach.
