At the Cologne-Porz site, a commercially available nitrogen generator is coupled with a thermochemical reactor to produce pure nitrogen with less than 10 ppm oxygen in an energy-efficient manner. The nitrogen generator pre-purifies air to one per cent residual oxygen content in nitrogen and the thermochemical reactor uses the redox reaction of a metal oxide to further purify the nitrogen stream. Nitrogen is an important raw material, particularly in fertiliser production.
