Facing air transport challenges together

Mobility in urban airspaces was a key topic at the 12th IFAR Summit. How can aircraft be used autonomously to transport cargo and passengers in the future? Regarding the further development of Urban Air Mobility (UAM), the International Forum for Aviation Research (IFAR) has agreed on a cooperation with the United Nations air transport organisation (International Civil Aviation Organization; ICAO). In addition, the support of young researchers was a central part of the event. At the invitation of the leading Polish research institution, the Łukasiewicz Research Network - Institute of Aviation (ILOT), more than 60 participants from aviation research organisations met in Warsaw (Poland) and online in October. At the same time, ILOT celebrated its 95th anniversary. As a founding member, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has been supporting IFAR activities for more than 10 years.
IFAR is an information and discussion platform for aviation research. The globally unique network unites members from 26 countries who meet annually at the highest level to exchange views on global challenges and possible solutions. Working groups dedicated to areas such as sustainable air transport and uncrewed aerial systems enable intensive cooperation between the members.
DLR and the NRC further develop a wake turbulence warning system
DLR concluded an agreement with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) at the IFAR Summit. Markus Fischer, DLR Divisional Board Member for Aeronautics, and Ibrahim Yimer, Director General of the NRC Aerospace Research Centre, signed the agreement. As part of the Wave App cooperation, a wake turbulence warning system will be further developed and tested on board an NRC research aircraft. Among other things, the knowledge gained from this will be used in the DLR project Next Generation Intelligent Cockpit (NICo). "Wave App is a good example of innovation, applied research and technology transfer," says Fischer. The new agreement – concluded on the 50th anniversary year of German-Canadian scientific and technological cooperation – is also linked to the strategic cooperation between DLR and the NRC.
IFAR Leadership team changes
DLR is a permanent member of the IFAR Leadership team and is represented by Markus Fischer and Joachim Szodruch. Fischer succeeds Rolf Henke in this position; Henke said farewell at the IFAR event. Adél Schröpfer from the International Relations Department at DLR took over as head of the IFAR Secretariat, which has been supported by DLR since its establishment. The Summit also appointed Ibrahim Yimer as the new Chair and Bruno Sainjon, Chairman of the Board of Administrators of Office national d'études et de recherches aérospatiales, (ONERA) as Vice-Chair.
The Czech Aerospace Research Centre (VZLU) has issued invitations to the 13th IFAR Summit in Prague (Czech Republic) during October 2022 to discuss the topics 'Green Deal' and 'Urban and suburban air mobility'.
