Aviation Research Meets Practice

  • Practice-oriented education: Covering airport regulation, strategic planning, and the integration of modern environmental standards.
  • Global perspectives: Engaging in discussions on current challenges with professionals from the international aviation sector.
  • Future-oriented learning: Providing tools and best practices for modern airport management.

Scientifically Based Education in Airport Management

In January 2025, Dr. Sven Maertens and Wolfgang Grimme from the DLR Institute of Air Transport taught the modules "Airport Management I and II" as part of the MBA programme "Aviation Management" at the University for Continuing Education Krems. The course, conducted for the first time in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with Abu Dhabi University, brought together aviation professionals, including pilots, airline and airport managers, as well as air traffic control and ground handling specialists, from countries such as Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Croatia, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Mexico, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Bridging Theory and Practice

The lectures aimed to connect theoretical concepts with practical applications. Topics such as the economic significance and strategic and operational planning of airports, environmental protection strategies, and the complex relationships between airports and airlines were presented and discussed in a practice-oriented manner. "Modern airports face a variety of challenges, from optimising operational processes to integrating sustainable practices. Our goal is to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to meet these demands," explained Wolfgang Grimme.

A particular focus was placed on linking scientific research with practical implementation. "Participants gain deeper insights into theory and current research findings. At the same time, their practical experience allows us to incorporate new challenges from the field into our research," added Dr. Sven Maertens.

Discussing Current Challenges

The breadth of topics reflected the diversity of the group. Intense discussions revolved around how airports can achieve more efficient operations through better collaboration among stakeholders and the use of modern technologies. The increasing commercialisation of airports was another key topic, particularly strategies to maximise commercial revenue beyond traditional flight operations. Sustainability and environmental protection also played a significant role, with best practices for reducing emissions and implementing climate-compatible concepts being presented. Additionally, the growing expectations of passengers for seamless processes and high-quality service offerings were analysed, highlighting their impact on the strategic development of airports.

The lectures not only addressed current challenges but also presented concrete examples and solutions. Topics such as the regulation of airport charges and the challenges of intermodal transport concepts were examined in depth.

Long-Standing Cooperation for Global Management Education

The cooperation with the University for Continuing Education Krems has been ongoing for several years and highlights the DLR Institute of Air Transport's commitment to international education. Following online lectures during the pandemic and an in-person course in Krems, the most recent session was deliberately held in Abu Dhabi to strengthen the programme's international character.

A Contribution to the Future of Aviation

By closely linking research, teaching, and practice, the DLR Institute of Air Transport aims to contribute to the advancement of airport management, with a particular focus on efficiency, passenger satisfaction, and climate compatibility. The international scope of the lectures and the diverse range of perspectives open up new pathways for airports to not only be economically successful but also environmentally and socially responsible.
