DLR's German Satellite Data Archive (D-SDA) in Neustrelitz is one of the most modern long-term archives in the world. It serves to archive all of the Earth Observation Center's remote sensing data and products in both the short- and long-term, as well as providing access for users.
Long-term archiving of environmental data
The large-scale facility is the central component in the system whereby data is processed and accessed by scientific staff at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), ensuring both data security and fast and straightforward access.
This facility, at DLR's German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD), encompasses all of the components belonging to the production part of the Data and Information Management System (DIMS), making it the centrepiece of D-SDA in Neustrelitz. DIMS is an entire system distributed across the EOC sites at Oberpfaffenhofen and Neustrelitz; the two local subsystems are connected to each other via a network.
The large-scale facility comprises the following systems: DIMS Product Library (catalogue server, storage system, database), the robot archive (archive server, storage system, two redundant robot libraries for the first and second tape copies, tape drives, hierarchical storage management, the production control server and systems for data exchange, the DIMS Operating Server + Operating Workstations, a hard drive capacity of approximately 40 terabytes and a tape capacity of approximately 33 petabytes.
