Working Student: Augmented Reality Interface Development for Intuitive Robot Programming

Future robotic applications will use Machine Learning techniques for easy and intuitive setup and robust performance even in unstructured environments. Learning from Demonstration (LfD) is an active research domain with the aim to enable non-experts to intuitively transfer task knowledge to robots, e.g. via teleoperation or kinesthetic teaching. Regardless of the essential role that the user plays in this process, relatively little focus has been put on supporting the human with modern User Interfaces. We want to explore the capabilities of Augmented Reality (AR) to close the knowledge gap between the robot and the user by providing the user with structured information about the robot’s task knowledge while programming. The user shall furthermore be able to interface and instruct the robot via the AR-App.

Your Tasks:

  • Actively develop and maintain an AR-App that assists users during intuitive robot programming
  • Evaluate different User Interfaces such as AR/VR Headsets, Beamer, Tablet, etc.
  • Conduct user tests on the real robot for manufacturing applications, such as surface finishing and assembly Your Qualifications:
  • Strong app development skills in Unity (C#)
  • Experience with Augmented Reality app development (MRTK)
  • Experience with software development, including Git, Python, CI/CD
  • Interest in robotics and ML
  • Interest for Human-Machine-Interfaces

Start Date:

• Earliest possible date
