Zittau

DLR site Zittau

At the Zittau site, the focus is on the low-emission industry of tomorrow. Research centres on reducing carbon dioxide emissions from a wide range of industrial processes, which are an important building block in the energy transition and for achieving national climate objectives.

At its Zittau site, DLR is expanding its energy research with the new Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes. The aim is to significantly reduce carbon dioxide and pollutant emissions from industry and power plants by decarbonising energy-intensive industrial sectors to sustainably generate and store electricity.

Among other things, researchers are working on innovative technologies for sustainable industrial energy supply. These include high-temperature heat pumps for process heating and cooling, as well as simulation and virtual design approaches for transforming existing industrial processes, taking both technological and economic perspectives into account. Solutions are also being developed for sectors in which full electrification is not possible, or only partially feasible, for example through the use of low-carbon energy carriers and reducing agents.

A particular focus is placed on collaboration with companies in the context of technology transfer, as well as on cooperation with other research institutions.
