Effect of an impact on aluminium

Effect of an impact on aluminium
In a laboratory experiment conducted at the European Space Agency (ESA), a small aluminium sphere was fired at an 18-centimetre-thick aluminium block. The projectile was travelling at about 6.8 kilometres per second. The image clearly depicts the resulting damage. An active satellite would experience similar effects in the event of a collision with space debris.
