Luftwaffe A-310 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT)
Since September 2010, the German Air Force has had the capability for strategic air refuelling. With the installation of internal fuel tanks and a corresponding conversion kit for air refuelling, the Airbus A310 MRT (Multi Role Transport) converts to the MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport). The in-flight refuelling system uses the ‘hose and drogue’ technique, where hoses with baskets, or drogues, at the end are deployed from under-wing pods. Tornadoes and Eurofighters can be refuelled, creating a force that can be deployed strategically over long distances. The tanked can carry 72 tons of fuel, of which 46 tons can be delivered for air-air refuelling.
