Construction of the measuring instruments
The OGS stationary ground station acts as a specialised laboratory and can be flexibly equipped with a variety of instruments. For the OPALS experiment, infrared cameras with special optics were used. They enable the measurement of the intensity and coherence of the received signal. Using a special test signal, the bit error rate of the received signal was also determined. Worldwide there are only a few telescopes able to measure the characteristics of an optical communication signal so precisely.
