Phlegra Montes extends like a salient into the northern lowlands of Mars, to the northeast of the Elysium volcanic region. There, it forms a mountain ridge over 1500 kilometres long that separates Elysium from Arcadia Planitia. The ESA Mars Express spacecraft flew over the southern part of the region on 8 October 2014 during orbit 13,670 and acquired the image strips shown here with the HRSC camera system, developed and operated by DLR. The images presented here show the region in the smaller rectangle to the north of Lockyer Crater.
