Topographical overview map of Nili Fossae
Nili Fossae is located on the eastern edge of the giant Isidis Planitia impact basin. Along with the volcanic region of Syrtis Major, the grabens of Nili Fossae, which are several hundred kilometres long, form a concentric pattern running parallel to the edge of the basin. Nili Fossae came to the attention of astronomers during the last century, when Mars could only be observed from Earth with ground-based telescopes.
