Using TanDEM-X to ‘watch’ rice growing
Broad rice growing areas stretch across the region around Lake Gala in southwestern Turkey. The German TanDEM-X radar satellite provides data precise enough to observe the growth in individual rice fields, from the start of the vegetative stage, through the ripening phase, until harvest time. The various colours of the fields in the image represent the different heights of the plants. The measured height ranges from a few to 20 centimetres. This information is used, among other things, to precisely predict the time at which the crop should be harvested.
