Expansion of the ozone hole from 2007
This image shows the areal extent of the ozone hole as detected by the DLR World Data Center for Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere (WDC-RSAT) in Oberpfaffenhofen using daily satellite measurements. The ozone hole formed remarkably late this year (2015) – during the last third of August (bold red line). Then, in September, it reached an area the size of the North American continent. The magnitude of this expansion is the second largest measured until now. Only in 2006 was the hole about one million square kilometres larger than in this year.
