Computer simulation of gravitational waves – if all goes to plan, the LISA Pathfinder technology demonstrator will pave the way for eLISA to detect gravitational waves in space, starting in 2034. These waves might be caused, for example, by two black holes merging. Such events are very difficult to study from Earth, because they emit little visible radiation and are also often very distant.
