The DLR facility was situated roughly 300 metres from the Neumayer Station III operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute. It was used to cultivate cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes and other plants. DLR engineers used the EDEN ISS project to research the conditions under which small numbers of vegetable plants would deliver the highest yield.
