The DLR Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology operates the vertical test section Cologne (VMK), a vertically oriented wind tunnel, at its location in the city. It is used to test Mach numbers in a range of Mach 0.5 to 0.95 and 1.5 to 3.2. This tunnel is equipped with hydrogen-oxygen supply, which is used to test rocket models with exposure to a hot exhaust plume.
