Precise characterisation of transient flow processes around the tail section is particularly relevant for the design and assessment of future space transport vehicles. The complex interaction between chemical processes and a turbulent flow field significantly affects the thermal and aerodynamic stresses acting on the launcher. Scale-adapted simulations are conducted on generic models at the DLR Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology in order to quantify these effects with a high degree of reliability and precision. The image is an example of the results obtained from this kind of simulation, which was performed as part of the SFB-TRR40 project by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
