Condensation trails are formed from water vapour in conjunction with the soot particles emitted by aircraft. After a short time, ice crystals form in the cold atmosphere. Cirrus clouds can later develop from these contrails. These anthropogenic clouds, together with the contrails, are collectively referred to as ‘contrail cirrus’.
