As part of Expedition 1, the first long-term crew put the ISS into operation 20 years ago. German ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer sees US astronaut William McMichael Shepherd and Russian cosmonauts Yuri Pavlovich Gidzenko and Sergei Konstantinovich Krikalev as pioneers. He too is scheduled to make the journey to the International Space Station soon.
