For the Touching Surfaces experiment, Matthias Maurer examined and tested new types of surfaces for their antimicrobial effectiveness under space conditions. Long-term stays of astronauts in a space station lead to the development of microflora from the microorganisms carried on board, which can impact the health of the crew.
