Upper stage 'made in Germany' puts James Webb on course
The upper stage of the Ariane 5 rocket will take the James Webb space telescope on its long journey into deep space. Built by ArianeGroup in Bremen, it arrived at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana on 11 November 2021 and was hoisted and assembled onto the main stage on 16 November. On the way to its destination, the upper stage burned 14.7 tonnes of propellant consisting of liquid oxygen and hydrogen to generate 6.6 tonnes of thrust for 1000 seconds. After separating from the main stage, the upper stage put James Webb on course towards its Lagrange point.
