The results of observations performed by GRACE are so different from other types of hydrology data that researchers had to develop innovative techniques before they could use the new dataset and combine it with other observations and models. Within a year or two of its launch, however, the GRACE dataset provided new insights into how the hydrological cycle is changing, especially in places that are hard to monitor from the surface. Today, researchers continue to develop new techniques to process and analyse the data to provide information not measured by other sensors. The map shows where Earth’s gravity field differs from the calculated model. Red and yellow colours indicate the areas where it is stronger, dark blue colours indicate the areas where it is weaker than in the model.
