In the future, laser communication will be an indispensable tool for fast and secure data links to and via satellites and aircraft. Laser links enable enormous data rates, quantum encryption as well as more precise future satellite navigation systems.
For more than 15 years, the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation has been operating an Optical Ground Station at the Oberpfaffenhofen site to research and test new applications via "laser link" in optical free-space communication. For the research tasks of the coming decades, this station has now been extensively expanded and upgraded with new laboratory facilities for signal analysis, a high-performance optical telescope, various measuring instruments and a laser source on the Fürstenfeldbruck radio tower.
