In the coming years, Germany is set to become number one in Europe for digital growth, so the promotion of Big Data technology is one of the top items on the German Federal Government’s digital agenda. The amount of data generated worldwide by scientific research, industry and private households is growing relentlessly.

This is also true of the aeronautics, space, energy, transport and security sectors. In addition, there is the use of advanced sensor and control technology in the era of Industry 4.0 and the enormous increase in the use of social networks.

The resulting volumes of data must not only be transmitted and stored, but also properly processed. This trend is currently encapsulated by the catchphrases ‘Big Data’ and ‘Data Science’. The retrieval of the knowledge contained within these datasets presents a major challenge from a scientific, technological and societal point of view.

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) will draw upon its expertise in fundamental Big Data research, the development of algorithms, and software methodology in a targeted way in order to help address this challenge in the cross-sectoral field of Big and Smart Data.
