The main GALA components
For the GALA laser altimeter on the JUICE spacecraft, two central electronic units were developed and built in large parts at the DLR Institute of Planetary Research: the GALA Electronic Unit (ELU, left) and the GALA Laser Electronic Unit (LEU). The ELU controls the entire instrument, processes the raw scientific data and provides various supply voltages. The University of Bern and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (Spain) contributed to the components. The LEU (right) controls the laser system and provides the required laser pump currents of 200 amperes. This unit was developed and built by Hensoldt Optronics GmbH under a contract with the DLR Institute of Planetary Research, funded by the German Space Agency at DLR.
