Multi-stage 2-shaft compressor test rig (M2VP)

The compressor test rig at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) DLR Institute of Propulsion Technology in Cologne enables a large number of compressor tests to be carried out. Its shaft system, consisting of hollow and core shafts, makes the multi-stage 2-shaft compressor (M2VP) ideal not only for the examination of single- or multi-stage compressors, but also for combinations of low-pressure and high-pressure compressors that can be operated at different speeds or in different directions.

Investigations carried out with M2VP range in scope from measuring the complete compressor range and determining the surge limit via detailed flow field measurements, to special applications such as active noise control on single-stage fans or counter-rotating prop fans.

The investigations result in extensive experimental measurement data (both steady-state and time-resolved). These data are used for comparison with numerical simulations, and for validating and optimising design processes. Moreover, they provide scientists with a deeper understanding of the highly complex physical flow phenomena that occur within the compressor.
