Joachim Winter remembers his first train ride like it was yesterday: "It was from Lübeck to Travemünde on the Baltic Sea with a steam locomotive, third class in the passenger car. I was travelling by rail before I could walk."

Energy research
The energy system of the future must be sustainable. Ideally, it should not generate emissions that affect the climate or be at risk of major malfunctions or hazardous environmental impact. Energy should be economical and socially acceptable and its provision should be reliable. Required highly efficient technologies to produce and use this energy are the focus of the DLR energy research.
TerraSAR-X
With the TerraSAR-X radar satellite, the land masses of the Earth are particularly closely inspected. This includes the mapping of our forests, the generation and current updating of land utilization maps, the recording of derelict land areas and the estimation of the maturitylevel of areas in agricultural use, as well as the study and monitoring of geologically active areas such as volcanic and earthquake regions.
Aeronautics research
DLR develops solutions for current and next generations of technology. With its research expertise in the overall air transport system, DLR is pursuing the goal of designing well-founded proposals for the generation after next and thus opening up new perspectives for aviation
Security research
In this cross-sectoral area, research and development activities in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy and transport that have relevance for defence and security are planned and controlled in coordination with partners in government, science and industry.
DLR research aircraft HALO
The High Altitude and LOng Range Research Aircraft (HALO) research aircraft heralds a new chapter in the history of German atmospheric research and Earth observation. The combination of range, cruising altitude, payload and comprehensive instrumentation make the aircraft a globally unique research platform.
TanDEM-X
The objective of the TanDEM-X mission (TerraSAR-X add-on for Digital Elevation Measurement) is to produce a highly accurate, three-dimensional image of our Earth with uniform quality and unprecedented accuracy.
