Emissions from major cities can spread beyond the limits of these urban areas under certain weather conditions. When this happens, the wind often carries particles and gaseous pollutants over 1000 kilometres.

Digitalisation research
Digitalisation is key for DLR's major research areas: aeronautics, space, energy, transport and the cross-sectoral area of security. With the adoption of the 2030 Strategy, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has expanded its portfolio with the new cross-sectoral area of digitalisation.
Transport research
DLR conducts research into the transport sector. With its extensive programme, DLR is Europe’s second largest institutionally funded transport research institution. Here, the challenges for tomorrow's mobility are identified and concrete interdisciplinary solutions are developed. The results contribute to a sustainable transport system in Germany and Europe that benefit both the economy and society.
Energy research
The energy system of the future must be sustainable. Ideally, it should not generate emissions that affect the climate or be at risk of major malfunctions or hazardous environmental impact. Energy should be economical and socially acceptable and its provision should be reliable. Required highly efficient technologies to produce and use this energy are the focus of the DLR energy research.
Alexander Gerst's mission 'horizons – Knowledge for Tomorrow'
Gerst embarked on his mission to the International Space Station –'horizons - knowledge for tomorrow –on 6 June 2018. There he worked for the second time in the largest international technology project of all time. From the beginning of October he was also commander of the ISS.
Research aircraft
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) operates the largest civilian fleet of research aircraft and helicopters in Europe. The aircraft are stationed at DLR’s sites in Braunschweig and Oberpfaffenhofen.
Rosetta mission
In 2014, the Philae lander on board the European Rosetta spacecraft reached comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The goal of this first landing on a comet was to learn more about the formation of the Solar System.
DLR research aircraft HALO
The High Altitude and LOng Range Research Aircraft (HALO) research aircraft heralds a new chapter in the history of German atmospheric research and Earth observation. The combination of range, cruising altitude, payload and comprehensive instrumentation make the aircraft a globally unique research platform.
