Carried on board a Titan 4B rocket, the Cassini spacecraft and the Huygens probe were launched on 15 October 1997 from Cape Canaveral during a spectacular nocturnal lift-off. It took seven years for the spacecraft to reach Saturn, which orbits the Sun at a distance of around 1.4 billion kilometres.
