Identifying climate risks and taking countermeasures

Climate events such as extreme temperature fluctuations and severe storms are becoming increasingly frequent and can pose risks to operational safety. DLR sites are no exception. That is why we have tasked the meteorological company meteoblue to conduct a climate scenario analysis for each of our 30 sites across Germany.
These climate scenario analyses – also known as climate risk analyses – include 30 DLR sites in accordance with the standards laid out in the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and EU Taxonomy. Climate scenarios in general describe potential future climate developments and are based on a combination of information on socio-economic trends and future greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. Depending on the scenario, ranging from minimal to stringent mitigation measures, the impacts of climate change will either increase or decrease. The analyses commissioned by DLR use the official scenarios from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The climate scenario analyses factor in 28 climate risks, which can be assigned to the four categories of temperature, wind, water and solid matter. Examples of climate risks include heatwaves, storms, floods and land subsidence. These analyses help us better identify and understand the relevant local risks for DLR sites. This way, risks can be factored into site development plans and appropriate preventive measures can be implemented to adapt to climate change, including during construction and renovation.
