The activities at the DLR site in Oberpfaffenhofen focus on the operation of aerospace missions as well as research and development in the fields of Earth observation, navigation, communications, robotics, transport and digitalisation.

With approximately 2000 employees in 13 scientific facilities, the DLR site in Oberpfaffenhofen is one of the largest research centres in Germany. Here, the areas of focus include participation in space missions, climate research, Earth observation, the development of navigation systems and the further development of robotics technology.

To this end, DLR works closely with universities and research institutes in Germany and abroad, as well as with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the US space agency NASA. The DLR_School_Lab gives our young visitors an introduction to the spectacular world of space research. The itinerary also includes a visit to DLR's German Space Operations Center. With a little luck, you might even be able to watch a live broadcast from the International Space Station (ISS).

The International Space Station (ISS)
The International Space Station ISS travels at an altitude of around 400 kilometers and at a speed of 28,000 kilometers per hour. The European science module Columbus is operated from Oberpfaffenhofen, near Munich/Germany: the Columbus Control Center is situated within the German Space Operations Center of the German Aerospace Agency (DLR).

Flying behind the A320 ATRA with the Falcon
For these experiments with alternative fuels, two DLR research aircraft flew at a typical cruising altitude of between nine and twelve kilometres, one behind the other in formation, in a specially restricted airspace. Leading the formation is the A320 ATRA, closely followed by the DLR Falcon.

The his­to­ry of DLR site Oberp­faf­fen­hofen – 1937 to 2004

Flugfunk Forschungsinstitut Oberpfaffenhofen (FFO), an independent research facility, was set up in Oberpfaffenhofen in 1937, at around the same time as the Dornier aircraft hangar was being built. The job of the FFO changed with the outbreak of World War II (1939–1945).
