Plan view of the Juventae Chasma basin
This view into the Juventae Chasma basin allows the different landscape forms found in this terrain to be seen. To the south (left), a relatively smooth, even surface, bearing sand and dust deposits is visible. Traces of large-scale tectonic movement, rock falls and the remnants of what were once highland plains, now relentlessly eroded, can be seen in the Maja Valles valley system (right) that stretches north from Juventae Chasma, with the intact highland areas located on the upper edge of the image. The two mountains, in places 3300 metres high, standing in the centre of the image and showing strong signs of wind erosion, are the most impressive features.
