Fragment of a metal-rich asteroid
To date, only about 40 asteroids have been identified as metal rich; with the new infrared method devised by planetary scientists at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), this number will rise considerably. The surface temperature of the asteroid is examined in the infrared portion of the spectrum – metal-rich asteroids appear cooler than rocky ones. This iron meteorite was found in South America.
