Radar view of Berlin

Radar view of Berlin
The Berlin Mitte district appears to be illuminated yellow in this radar image. The skeletal appearance of the buildings is created by the radar emissions, which are particularly strongly reflected by the corners and edges. This type of measurement from space is possible using the ‘Staring Spotlight’ on the German radar satellite TerraSAR-X. In this mode, the antennas of the satellite are directed towards the target area for an extended time and the resolution can be improved; in this particular case it is 20 centimetres. In the centre of the image, the Tiergarten and the Victory Column are visible; to the left are the Central Station and the Federal Chancellery.
