Regional overview map of Ascuris Planum
Ascuris Planum is part of the Martian crust that must have been exposed to substantial tectonic stress over long periods of time in the Red Planet’s history. Most of the parallel trenches run northeast to southwest, although some intersect this primary alignment. This is indicative of a change in the ‘stress regime’, which is the term used by geologists to refer to this kind of tension in the crust.
