Anaglyph images can be created from data acquired by the nadir channel of the HRSC, which is directed vertically onto the surface of Mars, and the oblique view from one of the four stereo channels. They give, when using red-blue or red-green glasses, a realistic, three-dimensional view of the landscape. Numerous inselbergs or ‘escarpment outliers’ can be seen. They are the remains of the adjoining highland in the south (outside the image), which was eroded and worn by ice activity and possibly also water activity. Traces of erosion and deposits from ice flows can be identified between the individual hills, which brought large quantities of debris, sand and dust with them. Also of interest in this 3D view are the unusually eroded, bulging edges of some of the impact craters.
