Aonia Terra is located in the southern highlands of Mars and is known for its numerous craters. The southern highlands are among the oldest regions on Mars, with some places dating as far back as four billion years. The unnamed crater in the centre of the image is 30 kilometres in diameter and lies within a network of dry river valleys that were probably carved out by groundwater outflow combined with surface runoff from rainwater. They are estimated to have been created in the late Noachian to early Hesperian periods (3.8 to 3.6 billion years ago). North is to the right of the image.
