The digital terrain models generated using data acquired by the stereo image channels of the High Resolution Stereo Camera on ESA’s Mars Express orbiter can be used to create perspective views of the Martian landscape. The large Tantalus Fossae graben system lies to the east of the four-kilometre-high Alba Patera volcano and gives an idea of the enormous forces that acted on the Martian crust from below through local and regional stress fields and led to volcanic and tectonic activity. The crater on the right in the image has a diameter of 18 kilometres and is intersected by several grabens. This indicates that the crater was formed before the end of the graben-forming tectonic activity.
