DLR – Strategy for an international future

International cooperation is a key element of scientific success and the development of effective solutions to global challenges such as climate change. For this reason, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has formulated its first internationalisation strategy.

Pascale Ehrenfreund, Chair of the DLR Executive Board, explains: “Our Internationalisation Strategy 2030 will be an important tool for the further growth of international cooperation in the years ahead. At its core are four goals that focus on scientific excellence, contributing towards addressing societal challenges and partnering with industry.” The Internationalisation Strategy 2030 is an integral part of DLR’s Strategy 2030.

With regard to DLR’s scientific excellence, the strategic goals include the establishment of partnerships with the very best, the implementation of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and an increase in internationality.

The strategic objectives are complemented by 21 measures that have internal and external impact. These will enable the implementation and strategic development of DLR’s international activities.

DLR has identified 30 priority countries and international organisations, with which it would like to increase its cooperation in the coming years. The internationalisation strategy emphasises the special role of its five longstanding partners, the United States, France, Japan, Russia and the Netherlands. In addition to countries, cooperation partners also include international organisation such as the EU, the United Nations, research organisations, universities and space agencies.

DLR has an excellent global network and cooperates with over 500 institutions in more than 110 countries. Each year, DLR institutes and facilities employ over 540 guest researchers from more than 90 countries. The annual DLR-DAAD Research Fellowship Programme also welcomes around 120 scholars from over 40 countries.
