The Renazzo meteorite
The Renazzo meteorite
A fragment of the Renazzo meteorite weighing 38.1 grams. At 20.30 on 15 January 1824, fragments of a meteorite weighing around ten kilograms fell near the Italian town of Renazzo in the province of Ferrara. It is thought that this meteorite broke into three or four main fragments, as a nearby woman described hearing a triple bang at the time of the fall. Renazzo gave its name to a group of carbonaceous meteorites that were later discovered and denoted CR ('R' for Renazzo). The parent body of Renazzo was formed almost four million years after the birth of the Solar System and was not sufficiently heated up to lose its original water content.
