IM-2 landing site – Mons Mouton
The centre of this image shows the high plateau of Mons Mouton, an approximately six-kilometre-high mountain located approximately 85 degrees south latitude on the Moon. This is where the Athena lander of the IM-2 lunar mission, developed by the American space company Intuitive Machines, aims to touch down. The prime meridian is visible on the left edge of the image. Also on the left-hand edge is Malapert Crater, near which the precursor mission IM-1 landed in 2024, while Nobile Crater is in shadow at the bottom right. Mons Mouton was named in 2022 after the American mathematician Melba Roy Mouton (1929–1990).
