Final preparations before the journey to Florida and handover to NASA's Orion team
In January 2026, the team led by Thomas Berger – a radiation physicist and project manager for the DLR radiation experiments on Artemis I and II – conducted a final round of testing on the eight M-42-EXT dosimeters (four flight units and four backup devices) at the DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine in Cologne. At the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the NASA team attached Velcro fasteners to the flight units for installation inside the spacecraft and stowed them on board the Orion spacecraft in early February. After launch, the crew will switch on the devices and attach them to the four pre-determined locations inside the spacecraft. Positions were selected that offer varying degrees of shielding against space radiation.
