A CAPTn-1 unit
Under the name CAPTn (Cubesat to Accomodate Payloads and Technology Experiments), DLR has launched a programme in which new space technologies can be tested on CubeSats directly on site, i.e. in space. They have to withstand both the vibration loads during launch and the environmental conditions in space - i.e. extreme heat and cold as well as radiation and vacuum. The first satellite in the planned series, CAPTn-1, is expected to be launched into space in 2026 and will then orbit the Earth for around two years.
