Livestream: Surface Avatar 3 – ISS-to-Earth telerobotic experiment
Surface Avatar is a space demonstration mission by DLR and ESA, which is being carried out between the International Space Station ISS and a simulated Mars environment at DLR's site in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. In this latest and final experiment in the Surface Avatar series, NASA astronaut Jonny Kim controlled a team of varied robots – including a humanoid, a rover and two four-legged robots – that cooperate to explore and work in the mock-Martian terrain. Kim could use the surface robot team as intelligent co-workers with autonomous commands or take direct control of the robots' movements to fully immerse himself in their environment and 'touch, see and feel' everything through them. This is the first time that AI has been used to help an astronaut in space train and work with a robot.
