Much of the progress achieved over recent years has been thanks to the use of digital technology. A wide variety of applications have emerged that allow systems to process commands automatically, so that in many cases tampering can no longer be intercepted by human judgement. Accordingly, it is crucial for systems to be able to detect undesirable changes.

Germany’s cybersecurity strategy demands that companies protect their knowledge and expertise against unauthorised access in the digital age, regardless of where the data is stored or used. Appropriate technical and organisational measures include more manageable solutions for protecting systems. With its existing expertise, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is able to make a substantial contribution towards the cross-sectoral area of cybersecurity.

Cyber security is usually understood as the guarantee of the reliability of a system, including security against the influence of targeted interventions. A distinction is made between 'safety' – protection against uncontrolled influences – and 'security' – protection against targeted interventions. In this project, security, as defined here, is the primary aspect.
