Cyber security for autonomous and networked systems

Ground-supported augmentation system
Transmission of Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS) correction data with post-quantum cryptography encryption via L-band Digital Aeronautical Communication System (LDACS).

Cyber security is usually understood as the guarantee of the reliability of a system, including security against the influence of targeted interventions. A distinction is made between 'safety' – protection against uncontrolled influences – and 'security' – protection against targeted interventions. In this project, security, as defined here, is the primary aspect.

In the cross-sectoral Cyber-Security for Autonomous and Networked Systems project, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is focusing on two main areas – a secure landing approach system and secure communications procedures for intermodal transport.

The project aims to promote the following specific activities:

Secure landing approach system

  • Development of a cryptographic method that is robust against attacks from quantum computers (post-quantum cryptography)
  • Hardening of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers to enable navigation during jamming or spoofing
  • Designing a secure communications architecture for air transport

Cyber security in intermodal transport

  • Developing a framework for the analysis and categorisation of cyber attackers
  • Securing vulnerable air traffic management system interfaces
  • Protecting critical services from attackers
