As part of the joint project, a digital test field will be set up and operated on the SOW (Spree-Oder waterway) to investigate, develop and test concepts, algorithms and technologies for automated and networked navigation.

The focus is on the efficient integration of the waterway into a city logistics concept for supply and disposal in the capital region. By utilising main and secondary waterways, small, low-emission and automated ship units should lead to greater use of waterways and thus relieve the burden on goods transport by road.

In particular, a control and remote control centre, test field infrastructures for terrestrial communication and navigation and a mobile test vehicle are to be developed, built and operated in this joint project.

The individual project of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR)) aims to develop reliable communication and navigation solutions for use in the test field on the Spree-Oder waterway.

  1. Realisation of the world's first test field for the use of VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) for inland navigation applications on the Spree-Oder waterway
  2. Development and construction of a test field for the use of R-Mode as a terrestrial back-up positioning system for inland navigation applications
  3. Utilisation of short-range sensors (LIDAR) for relative positioning during automated berthing
